Raising and protecting is to eat. A mononoke sigle who eats nightmares (monsters) hunts nightmares in the human world for food. Sigre picks up a young man-like monster in the world where Mononoke lives, the phantom world. As food, Shigure tries to raise a young monster until he grows up.
